The PropaGATE project team and its partners presented on an innovative wastewater treatment trial at the WA Beer and Brewing Conference on 3 July, highlighting how new technology could help improve wastewater quality and support more sustainable food and beverage production.
The presentation focused on a trial underway at Spinifex Brewing Company, located at the Food Innovation Precinct WA (FIPWA), where Singapore-based company HydroLeap’s electrocoagulation technology is being tested to treat brewery wastewater. Electrocoagulation is a process that uses electricity rather than expensive chemicals to clean the water.
PropaGATE brings together industry and innovators to solve real-world challenges facing Western Australia’s agrifood sector. Rather than developing solutions from scratch, the project identifies industry priorities and connects businesses with proven technologies from Western Australia, across Australia and around the world. HydroLeap was selected through this process by an industry advisory group as the best-fit solution for the wastewater challenge.
As Western Australia experiences a drying climate, managing wastewater is becoming increasingly important and a cross-sectoral challenge. Improving the treatment and reuse of wastewater can help businesses reduce water costs and make better use of limited water resources. Sharing findings and opportunities across industry sectors helps support growth across the agrifood supply chain.
